Iranian Bitumen In Asia

WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2021

When the U.S. withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018, it had prohibited trade in Iranian petroleum and petroleum products, such as bitumen. Iran is the largest producer of bitumen in the Middle East; foreign firms that continue to trade in petroleum products could be subject to secondary sanctions based on U.S. sanctions authorities. In addition to exporting Iranian bitumen to Africa for road projects, millions of dollars worth of bitumen have also been shipped from Iranian producers to firms in Asia over the past year, Kharon found.
